Mini quilt progress and other things

by admin

I’m making good progress on finishing the mini quilt for my February 2019 UFO & WIP Challenge.  Working on such a small scale is so nice!  It goes quickly and it doesn’t take up much space (which is still limited in my temporary kitchen set up).

I chose a simple setting for my 3″ quilt blocks and felt like it needed something extra.  I went with applique and turned this mini quilt into a feel good statement.  I used EQ8 to do a little mock up of what that would look like.

So far, so good.  I changed up the lettering font a bit and used fusible applique and a small satin stitch with Magnifico Thread by Superior Threads.  This thread is one of my favorites for machine applique.  It’s a strong 40 wt. thread made from trilobal polyester and it has a beautiful sheen to it.  You can read more about my favorite tools for machine applique here, and for detailed applique instruction, check out my 3-part Applique Series.

The link up for February’s UFO & WIP Challenge is this Sunday, February 24, and it will be open for one week.  I’m still finishing up my mini quilt, so I’ll have more detailed photos to show you on Sunday.

How are you doing on your UFO project?  This month’s prize for one lucky winner is sponsored by Jacquelynne Steves – she is giving away a box of her favorite Aurifil Thread Floss (a $45 value!).  You’ll have to enter a picture of your finished project to Sunday’s link up to be entered into the giveaway.

Other sewing projects for me have been few, but I did finish one quilt block for The Granary’s El Camino Real Block of the Month designed by Nancy Rink. This was a challenging but fun block to teach (and to sew).  There were a lot of points that needed to match up!

The house renovations are coming along.  They’re almost finished putting tile in the bathrooms.  The other rooms are ready for paint.  We still have another six weeks left before we’re done.  For now, I’m taking two-minute showers in a mini RV, but at least I get to sleep inside the house – in my dining room!

This  month, I spent four days in Austin, Texas, with my daughter and granddaughters.  It was so fun to have a girl’s only weekend!  The weather was really cold; it even snowed a tiny bit, so we stayed inside mostly.  Amelia at 3 1/2 years old kept me busy with art work and pretend play.  Clara is almost 11 months old.  She is crawling everywhere and always wants to be part of the action.  I {almost} got my fill of snuggles and sniffles, and I miss them already!

I hope your week is going smoothly.  February is flying by!  I’ll be back on Sunday with the 2019 UFO & WIP Challenge link up.
